No.7 Decorah dumps Marion, 34-7

DECORAH - A 32-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Trevor Hardman to Quinn Cannoy was the lone scoring offense mustered by the Marion football team Friday night as the Indians fell to Class 3A No.7 Decorah, 34-7, in Decorah.

The Vikings (2-0) won their 16th straight game, the second longest winning streak in the state.

Decorah, which last year won the Class 3A title, took the opening kickoff 50 yards to set up shop on a short field. They scored less than three minutes into the game, taking a 6-0 lead.

Marion (1-1) looked to get things going on its first possession, but the drive ended with a Decorah interception at the Marion 39.

The Marion defense was able to hold the Vikes the remainder of the first quarter. However, just 50 seconds into the second frame, Holt Johansen found a seam to get into the end zone. The two-point try was successful, making it 14-0.

Needing to get some momentum, the Indians found a groove on their next offensive possession. They moved 47 yards in eight plays, going all the way to the Decorah 32.

On fourth and 10, the pesky Decorah defense got a stop, with Marion turning the ball over on downs. One play later, Johansen went 68 yards for the third Decorah score.

Trailing 28-0 in the fourth quarter, Marion again got things going offensively. Moving into the red zone, the Indian drive stalled on a fumble, with Decorah recovering and Dustin Cary returning the pigskin 91 yards to paydirt.

Marion’s lone scoring drive came late in the fourth quarter on a 10-play, 68-yard march.

For the game, Marion had 298 yards of total offense, with 172 coming on the ground and 126 through the air.

John Carstensen led the Indian rushing attack with 100 yards on 15 carries. Dontavious Young picked up 26 yards on four carries.

Hardman completed 8 of 16 passes. Cannoy grabbed two receptions for 63 yards while Logan Fuller had five catches for 49 yards.

Marion opens district play Friday at Anamosa (0-2).
