IOWA CITY - Iowa City High rushed for 559 yards and six touchdowns on 58 carries Friday night and topped the game Linn-Mar Lions, 42-28, in Iowa City.

Led by Xavier Washpun with 320 yards on 31 carries and supported by Garett Runge’s 131 yards on nine carries, the fifth-ranked Little Hawks (7-1) maintained possession and controlled the game.

Linn-Mar’s opportunity to tie the game at 14 in the second quarter was brought back by penalty. That forced the Lions (2-6) to attempt a 24-yard field goal, which was wide of the mark. It seemed like they could never quite get caught up the rest of the game.

Ryan Schmidt turned in an outstanding performance for the Lions in a losing effort. Schmidt completed 12 passes to four different receivers for 199 yards and a touchdown while compiling 60 yards rushing.

Schmidt pulled the Lions within 35-28 in the fourth quarter on a 41-yard touchdown pass to Garett Evans, but the visitors could not pull even.

“We think our quarterback is pretty good,” said Linn-Mar Coach Bob Forsyth. “We appreciate his hard work and effort. He runs our offense well.”

“We love how Ryan gets us the ball,” said receiver Griffin Brenneke. “If any of us are double-teamed, he always finds the open man. We have connected on the deep route a number of times this year.”

“We usually have pretty good blocking so I can read the run or have the time to pass,” said Schmidt. “We have fast receivers to throw to and I am not so agile, so I just lower my shoulder and drive the ball when I run.”

“I feel good about the effort of our kids,” said Forsyth. “Iowa City is a good team and we were not always able to take advantage of our opportunities. We executed well on offense and carried out our game plan. City High is just a good team.”

Linn-Mar hosts Xavier next Friday.
