Strutz tosses 2 TD passes, runs for another in loss

WYOMING -- Midland put up 54 first-half points and cruised to a 66-20 win over Cedar Valley Christian in an 8-man football game Friday night.

The Eagles (4-0) were led by Ryan Leonard who scored three touchdowns in the first half and Cody Kanke who added two more.

Jeremy Strutz led the Huskies (0-3). He scrambled for 106 yards passing and two touchdowns and had 54 yards rushing and a touchdown.  Strutz and Nick Henderson, who ran for 72 yards, used the option sweep effectively against a strong Wyoming defense.

“I kind of like that option series,” said Strutz.  “You just read the play and decide.  Nick is so fast that he can get there ahead of the defense.  This is our first year, and football is just so much fun.  I just have to keep getting up and keep playing for my team.”

Attrition is becoming an issue for the Huskies.  They lost their leading receiver David Sperling to an ankle injury and Strutz and Henderson were nicked up as well.  With only 15 players on the squad, the injuries are piling up.

“Next week we will get two players back and be healthier,” said Huskies Coach Ed Betsworth.  “Strutz is just a courageous kid, as all of them are.  They just keep doing whatever we ask of them.  We work on the option and it begins to pay off, they just work so hard.  I am proud of them."
