J-Hawks sweep previously unbeaten Rams

PDF

DUBUQUE -- Jefferson’s senior dominated lineup led the way as the fifth ranked J-Hawks knocked No. 10 Dubuque Senior from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 2-1, 9-3 doubleheader sweep Tuesday night.

Senior Hannah Petersen struck out 10 and scattered four hits in the opener. Nearly 75 percent of her pitches were strikes.

Seniors Rachel Sedlacek and Kenna Fry each scored in the J-Hawk fifth with Fry also knocking in a key run.

“I have been working on a new technique, concentrating on a level cut,” said Fry, who struggled at the plate early in the year but has had two big RBIs and four hits in the last three games.

The Rams (18-2, 12-2 MVC) threatened in the seventh, scoring a run and putting the potential tying run on third with only one out. But Petersen fielded Natalie Jacobsmeier’s squeeze bunt attempt brilliantly and cut down pinch runner Jessie Westhoff at the plate.

“It’s something we have been working on,” said Petersen.  “It came in handy.”

Senior third baseman Hannah McInerney snagged Natalie Blatz’s infield flair to end the game.

In the second game, the J-Hawk seniors pounded out nine of the J-Hawks' 11 hits.  Senior Kailey Drake had a triple, a double and three RBIs.

“They were throwing them in there.  I just hit ‘em,” said Drake.

Sedlacek reached base four times, scoring three times, and senior Carson Burgart had a double.

Due to illness, the J-Hawks were without long-time coach Larry Niemeyer for the second straight night. The J-Hawks (19-3, 13-1) swept Waterloo West on Monday. Niemeyer's son, Nick, filled in both nights.

“I’m just trying not to screw it up,” joked the assistant coach.  “The kids knew (Senior’s) record and wanted to get these wins.”

Junior Brooke Stauffer scattered five hits, stranded nine runners, and gave up a single earned run to pick up the victory.

“She’s been a nice surprise.  Every game she gets better,” said Niemeyer.
