NIACC continues hex on Eagles

WATERLOO - NIACC bunched three of its four hits in the fourth inning and scored twice to down Kirkwood, 2-1, Friday in the first round of the NJCAA Division II Region XI baseball tournament at Riverfront Stadium.

The loss was the fourth for Kirkwood in five games against NIACC this season.

Kirkwood drops into the losers bracket where it will play top-seeded DMACC on Saturday morning at 10 in an elimination game. DMACC was beaten by No.8 seed Southwestern, 2-1, Friday.

Region XI tournament postponed by rain

WATERLOO - The first round of the Region XI baseball tournament was postponed by rain Thursday, pushig the tournament back one day.

Games are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Friday. Kirkwood plays NIACC at 1 p.m.

The tournament now will run through Tuesday at Riverfront Stadium.

Kirkwood faces NIACC in baseball tourney

WATERLOO - The Kirkwood Eagles will face NIACC in the opening round of the Region XI junior college baseball tournament Thursday at 1 p.m. at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo.

NIACC and Kirkwood both finished 13-11 in the conference this year, but NIACC got the No.4 seed and Kirkwood drew the No.5 seed because NIACC won the season series, 3-1.

The double-elimination tournament is scheduled to continue Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in Waterloo.

If Kirkwood defeats NIACC, the Eagles will face the DMACC/Southwestern winner at 4 p.m. Friday. If Kirkwood loses to NIACC, the Eagles will play the DMACC/Southwestern loser at 10 a.m. Friday.

THURSDAY
10 a.m. - No.1 DMACC (41-9) vs. No.8 Southwestern (11-28)
1 p.m. - No.4 NIACC (22-15) vs. No.5 Kirkwood (30-14)
4 p.m. - No.3 Iowa Central (33-14) vs. No.6 Ellsworth (15-28)
7 p.m. - No. 2 Southeastern (35-17) vs. No.7 Iowa Lakes (17-23)

Gagliardi glad to be pitching for Eagles

Anthony Gagliardi has bounced around a little bit the past two years after being named an all-state pitcher at Cedar Rapids Prairie in 2011.

He enrolled at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington after graduating from Prairie, but left after one semester and pitched at Indian Hills Community College in 2012.

He returned to Cedar Rapids this year and is pitching at Kirkwood Community College, his third junior college in two years of touring the state.

"It has been a roller-coaster," he affirmed Monday.

Jones helps Kirkwood split twinbill

Nick Jones went 4-for-6 and drove in six runs Sunday as the Kirkwood Eagles split an ICCAC doubleheader with Southwestern Community College at the Kirkwood field.

Southwestern rallied for an 11-6 victory in the first game after Kirkwood had grabbed a 6-2 lead after four innings.

The Eagles romped in the nightcap, 10-1.
