J-Hawk girls escape Senior, 52-50

DUBUQUE -- Leading by two with 1.8 seconds left to play, Jefferson sophomore Taylor Jacobson missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw attempt and Dubuque Senior's Elizabeth Reuter got off a good look at a 3-pointer at the buzzer. The shot clanged off the front iron and Jefferson escaped with a 52-50 win Tuesday night.

“We should have intercepted the pass and had a person up on the ball, but we won and that is what counts,” Jefferson Coach Larry Niemeyer said. "The kids played hard tonight. It's a win."

Jefferson (4-5, 4-3 MVC) came to Dubuque Senior (3-8, 1-6) looking for a win in the first game after the winter break. In a battle of young teams, Jefferson started three sophomores and Senior two freshmen.

No. 5 Warriors sweep J-Hawks away

Janay Pritchett found a small mess in the Cedar Rapids Washington locker room before the Dec. 17  basketball game against Jefferson, so she grabbed a bucket of soapy water and a mop and took care of it.

“I just cleaned it up,” she said, without fuss.

That chore accomplished, Pritchett helped the No.5 Warriors mop up the J-Hawks with 18 points in a 71-42 victory at the Washington gym in a Mississippi Valley Conference game.

J-Hawks hold off Hempstead

Jefferson survived a furious comeback and made its free throws down the stretch to hold off Dubuque Hempstead for a 63-58 win Tuesday night (Dec. 14) at home.

Jefferson came out ready to play and took an early 7-0 lead. Sophomore Taylor Jacobson led the early attack for the J-Hawks scoring 10 points of her team-high 19 points in the first quarter. The J-Hawks used a press and aggressive 2-3 zone to fluster the Mustangs into early turnovers.

The J-Hawks kept the pressure on in the second quarter and continued to bother the Mustangs with the press. Jacobson stayed hot finishing the half with 15 points and leading the J-Hawks to a 36-20 advantage.

Johnson dominates, Little Hawks roll past Jeff

IOWA CITY – The J-Hawks hung tough, but in the end Virginia Johnson and the Little Hawks’ second half surge proved  too much to overcome. Powered by Johnson’s 33 points, the No. 4 Little Hawks came away with a 64-49 win in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls’ basketball game Friday night (Dec. 10).

Jefferson (2-4, 2-2 MVC) had a trio of double-figure scorers. Taylor Jacobson had 12, Kaitlyn Davidson 11 and Brittney Steffeny 10.

Mickey Hansche added 14 points for City High (6-1, 3-1).

The J-Hawks trailed 36-29 at halftime, but cut the margin to four early in the third quarter.  City High’s lead quickly bounced back to a 10 points, sparked by a steal and layup by freshman Kiera Washpun.

J-Hawks can't stop Stokes

With his young team down 40-14 at halftime against one of the state’s premier teams, Jefferson Coach Larry Niemeyer told his players, “Go back out and relax and just try to do the things we can do.”

What they could not do was contain Linn-Mar star Kiah Stokes, who dominated the Dec. 7 game from the opening tipoff, scoring eight of the game’s first 10 points. She went on to break Linn-Mar’s 21-year-old single-game scoring record early in the fourth quarter when she reached 39 points with her 19th bucket.

 Linn-Mar won, 73-36.
