3s please J-Hawks in comeback win

CEDAR FALLS – The Jefferson J-Hawks used four 3-pointers, three from sophomore Kaitlyn Davidson, to come back and beat the Cedar Falls Tigers, 40-39, in their Mississippi Valley Conference opener Nov. 30.

Davidson led the J-Hawks with 13 points, sophomore Taylor Jacobson added 11 and sophomore Rachel Broghammer pulled down 10 rebounds.  Sophomore Emily Neff led a balanced attack for the Tigers with eight.

Trailing by two entering the fourth quarter, the J-Hawks tied the game at 32 on 3-pointers by senior Brittney Steffeny and Davidson, but then gave up six quick points to fall behind. Jefferson fought back and ended the game on an 8-1 run.

Davidson scored all eight points, including two 3-pointers.  The second gave the J-Hawks the lead for good. Despite missing the front end of a one-and-one twice, the Jefferson defense held on to preserve the win.

Jacobson’s nine points helped the J-Hawks to a 13-10 lead after the first quarter.

Jefferson went cold in quarter two, going only 3 of 11. Cedar Falls contributed to the poor shooting by switching to a triangle and two, slowing down Jacobson and Steffeny inside. The Tigers outscored the J-Hawks 10-6 and led 20-19 at halftime.

The Tigers shot 38 percent from the floor and 64 percent from the free throw line. The J-Hawks shot 29 percent from the floor and 70 percent from the free throw line.
