Cougar girls shoot down J-Hawks

Kennedy's Dennis Roloff moved one game closer to a coaching milestone Friday night when the Cougars clobbered Jefferson, 66-44, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game at Jefferson.

The win was the 299th of Roloff's 20-year career at Kennedy. He goes for his 300th Saturday night in a home game against Marion.

“It’s just another game,” Roloff said.

Courtney Strait, who led the Cougars with 17 points, said she would like to be a part of the team that gets Roloff his milestone win. “We think we can do it, we feel confident,” Strait said. “We haven’t felt any pressure to get this win so that should help.”

Kennedy (7-13, 6-10 MVC) came out hot against the J-Hawks. The Cougars made their first three shots and continued to shoot the ball well throughout the game.

Kennedy girls give No. 3 team a tussle

It was hard to tell the winning coach from the losing one in the Kennedy gym Tuesday night.

After his third-ranked Iowa City West girls eked out a hard-fought 62-53 victory, B.J. Mayer looked like he'd been through the wringer.

"Kennedy's a nice, well-coached team," said the exuberant young coach, hoarse and drained in sweat. "Their record is very deceiving."

Veteran Cougar Coach Dennis Roloff, meanwhile, was calm and collected, looking dapper in his Kennedy green coat and tie for the post-game Senior Night celebration.

"Is there," he asked rhetorically, "a better 6 and 13 team than we are? The girls just played their hearts out."

No. 7 Washington runs past Cougars

Kennedy tried to run with the Washington girls basketball team Friday night, but the result was not pretty.

The seventh-ranked Warriors ran the Cougars out of the gym, 77-43, on Hall of Fame Night at Washington.

Tia Dawson collected 18 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots for Washington (15-3, 12-2) in the Mississippi Valley Conference game.

The Warriors were too fast, too deep and too talented for Kennedy (6-12, 5-9). The Cougars committed a string of turnovers against Washington's fullcourt press and fell deeper and deeper behind as the mismatch continued.
