Kennedy girls fall; Lions, Warriors climb

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy girls basketball team dropped from No. 1 all the way down to No. 6 in the new Class 5A rankings Thursday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Kennedy (15-2) lost last week to Cedar Falls, which used the victory to jump from 10th to fourth in the rankings. Ankeny Centennial is the top-ranked team in Class 5A this week.

The Linn-Mar Lions (12-4) jumped from 13th to 10th in the Class 5A rankings. The Washington Warriors (11-6) claimed the 15th and final spot in the poll.

Hamilton commits to Iowa softball

Cedar Rapids Kennedy junior Ashley Hamilton has committed to the University of Iowa softball program, Kennedy activities director Aaron Stecker confirmed Wednesday morning.

Hamilton, a shortstop, hit .435 with two home runs and 28 RBIs for Kennedy last season as a sophomore. She was named second team all-state in Class 5A by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.

Hamilton helped the Cougars compile a 28-13 record last season.

Dolphin sparks No. 1 Cougars by Rams

DUBUQUE – Hailey Dolphin scored 22 points to lead the top-ranked Kennedy girls basketball team to a 73-30 win over Dubuque Senior in a Mississippi Valley Conference game Tuesday at Senior.

Lela Sellers added 14 points for the Cougars (15-2). Sydney Hayden scored 12 points. Dolphin and Hayden had four 3-pointers.

Dubuque Senior fell to 2-15.

Kennedy boys fall to Dubuque Senior

Dubuque Senior proved to be too much for the Kennedy boys basketball team, as the Rams beat the Cougars 72-61 in a Mississippi Valley Conference game Tuesday at Kennedy.

Drake Brewster scored 13 points for Kennedy (5-9). Derrick Diggins scored 12 points and Matt Gardner added 11 points.

Carter Stevens had 21 points for Senior (9-5) and Derek Noel had 20.

Techau wins Metro Spotlight Award

Max Techau of Xavier is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Techau, a 6-foot-7 junior, is a key member of the Xavier basketball team that is ranked No. 3 in Class 3A by the Associated Press with an 11-2 record.

Techau is averaging 15.0 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.5 blocks for the Saints. He leads the entire Mississippi Valley Conference in blocked shots and leads the Mississippi Division in the MVC in scoring average with a slight edge on teammate Mitchell Burger.
