Streaking Prairie Hawks sweep twinbill

Nic Mougin did double-duty on the mound for Prairie Monday night as the Hawks swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader from Waterloo East, 10-0 and 11-3, at the Prairie field.

Mougin tossed a one-hit shutout in the first game, which lasted only five innings, then pitched two perfect innings in relief in the nightcap.

Mougin needed only 52 pitches in the opener.

"He set the tone for our team by doing a good job of throwing strikes," Coach Matt Thede reported.

Prairie sweeps to top of Valley Division

Prairie and Cedar Falls sat atop the Valley Division of the Mississippi Valley Conference with 7-3 records going into their baseball doubleheader at Prairie Friday night.

When the smoke cleared, the Hawks were all alone in first place after sweeping the Tigers, 3-0 and 6-3.

“We tell our kids that every game is that game. Every game is playing for the championship,” said Prairie Coach Matt Thede. “It’s been a long week, but right now, (near) the halfway point, we are on top.”

It was about pitching for Prairie (14-6, 9-3). Brennan Hammer toed the rubber in the opener and scattered five hits while striking out nine batters in six innings. Ty Mougin picked up the save in the seventh.

Prairie Hawks upset No.1 Ankeny

Many elements are necessary to upset a top-ranked team.

For such an event to happen, the underdog team has to execute to perfection, take advantage of any opportunities and come up with the clutch plays at clutch times.

Cedar Rapids Prairie's baseball team did all of the above Thursday night.

The Hawks turned three double plays on defense, scored all five of their runs after two were out and got big hits from seniors Ty Mougin and Brennan Hammer in the decisive two-run sixth inning to send top-ranked Ankeny back to central Iowa with a 5-3 defeat in a well-played game at Prairie.
