Wirth nets 24 as Kohawks fall

Andrew Wirth scored 24 points and JT Vonderhaar added 18 Wednesday night, but they weren't enough to prevent the Coe men's basketball team from dropping a 71-65 verdict to Wartburg in an Iowa Conference game before 469 fans at Eby Fieldhouse.

Wartburg built a five-point lead at halftime and finished the game with that same five-point advantage.

Eddie Diemer scored 20 points for the Knights (12-12, 6-7). Jordan Cannon had 18.

Coe slipped to 11-13 overall and 3-10 in the league.

Coe's Wirth, Hansche rake in honors

The Coe College men's and women's basketball teams were well represented on this week's D3hoops.com National Team of the Week.

Senior guard Andrew Wirth and freshman guard Mickey Hansche were named to the team for the first time this year. Both were also named the Iowa Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Players of the Week. Wirth was also named the league's Male Athlete of the Week.

Hansche tied an Iowa Conference record with eight 3-pointers against Luther. She hit another four 3-pointers at Simpson as Coe defeated Simpson for just the third time ever on the road. Hansche averaged 19.0 points per game and was 12-for-21 from beyond the arc for the week.

Kohawks sweep Knox in tennis

Riley Galbraith, Alex Bernt, Mark Kroll, Daken Starkenburg and Bill Young won their singles matches in straight sets Sunday as Coe blanked Knox College, 9-0, in a men's tennis meet at the Clark Racquet Center.

The Kohawks raised their record to 5-0.

Hansche won't let diabetes get in her way

Mickey Hansche has had diabetes since she was six years old, but she hasn’t let it impact her love for basketball.

“It used to be pretty stressful when I was a kid, just learning how to balance it with sports and eating and school, but now it’s routine and I think I have it balanced pretty well,” she said.

Finding a balance doesn’t mean she’s exempt from parental worry.

Coe netters sweep 2 matches

The Coe College men's tennis team raised its record to 4-0 Saturday by sweeping a pair of matches against Wisconsin-La Crosse and Cornell at the Clark Racquet Center.

Michael Janssen and Alex Bernt played singles in both matches for the Kohawks and won their contests in straight sets. The Kohawks lost only one set all day.
