Solon tames Metro volleyball teams

It's somewhat odd, but the so-called “old gym” used for the Cedar Rapids Washington volleyball tournament Saturday is air conditioned while the “new gym ” is not due to an ongoing geo-thermal project at the school.

Switching back and forth over a sweltering eight-hour day didn't seem to faze small-school Solon, which lost just one game in five matches and claimed the championship in a star-studded 11-team field.

No real surprise there, since the Spartans are ranked second in the Class 4A IGHSAU poll and have won this meet against bigger schools twice in the last three years.

What was mildly surprising is that Solon faced Xavier in the title game.

Cougars knock off Prairie, 28-24

Cedar Rapids Kennedy junior running back Terrence Hall saw daylight and led the Cougars to a 28-24 win over Cedar Rapids Prairie Friday at John Wall Memorial Field.

Hall led a powerful Kennedy rushing attack with 99 yards on 13 carries. Miles Moa added 91 yards and Logan Wedo 79 yards as the Cougars ground it out, especially when it mattered the most, to improve to 2-0.

"We weren't going to let them stop our run game," Hall said. "We were going to pound it down their throat. That's what we do. That's what we work on in practice. It pays off."

No.1 Saints stuff J-Hawks, 44-0

The Xavier Saints are ranked No.1 in the state by the Des Moines Register, the Associated Press and The Gazette, but that can't be right.

Surely the Northern Iowa Panthers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa State Cyclones and Coe Kohawks are better than the Saints.

But if you're looking for the No.1 high school football team in the state, you won't get any arguments from Jefferson Coach Brian Webb.

"I haven't seen the teams on the west side (of the state), but I don't know who's better than this team on the east side," Webb said Friday night. "Xavier is where we want to be."

The Saints rolled to a 37-0 lead at halftime and smashed the J-Hawks, 44-0, on Senior Night at the Xavier field.

Mistake-prone Lions fall to 0-2

One step forward, two steps back.

Linn-Mar’s young football team is experiencing growing pains and it was evident in Friday night’s 28-13 loss to Dubuque Senior at Linn-Mar Stadium.

The Lions had their share of good plays, but for every good play, there was a miscue that would put them in a deep hole.

“We just made too many mistakes tonight,” lamented Linn-Mar Coach Bob Forsyth. “We’re a young team and we’re working hard trying to get them to grow up, but we are going through a tough time right now.
