Thorson wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Washington junior Jared Thorson is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award this week for high school boys, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Thorson is one of the top swimmers in Iowa and ranks in the top-5 in the state in four different events. He ranks second in the 100 butterfly and fifth in the 50 freestyle as an individual, and he ranks first in the 200 medley relay and fourth in the 200 freestyle relay with his teammates.

Thorson placed in four events at the state swimming meet last year. He was fourth in the 100 butterfly, fourth in the 200 medley relay, fourth in the 400 freestyle relay and seventh in the 200 freestyle relay.

Hembera wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Valley Christian junior Shelby Hembera is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Hembera is averaging 31.5 points and 15.3 rebounds for the girls basketball team after four games. She ranks third in the state in all classes in scoring and is tied for first in rebounding.

Hembera, a 6-footer, averaged 16 points and 8.6 rebounds as a freshman. She averaged 22 points and 9.9 rebounds rebounds as a sophomore and made all-state in Class 1A.

Jacob Olson wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior Jacob Olson is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Olson, a 6-foot point guard, has scored 25 points in both of Jefferson's basketball games this season against Clinton and Marion. He ranks third in Class 4A in scoring at 25 points per game.

Moon wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Washington junior Lynze Moon is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Moon rolled a 415 series for the Washington bowling team Tuesday when the Warriors defeated Iowa City High, 2516-2208, in the first meet of the season at Lancer Lanes. She bowled games of 213 and 202 to finish with the high game and high series.

Moon's 415 was the highest series by a female bowler in the Metro area last week.

Cline wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Washington junior Bryan Cline is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Cline began the season with the Washington bowling team Tuesday by rolling an impressive two-game series of 258 and 259 for a 517 series, the best series by a Metro bowler last week.

The Warriors defeated Iowa City High School in that meet, 2939-2680, at Lancer Lanes.
