Indians lick CPU in district opener

The Marion Indians are not kidding themselves about making the Class 3A state basketball tournament this year, but there's no harm in dreaming.

Marion breezed past Center Point-Urbana, 64-47, in the opening round of the playoffs Monday night at the Xavier High School gym, but that was the easy part.

Now the Indians (10-12) have a date in the district finals Thursday night against the Xavier Saints, a dangerous team that faced a steady diet of Class 4A competition in the Mississippi Valley Conference this season. And if the Indians somehow upset the Saints, they'll probably have to face top-ranked Dubuque Wahlert in the substate finals next Monday.

Saints double the score on Vinton

The Xavier Saints enjoyed their initial foray into the Class 3A district basketball tournament Monday night with an easy 64-32 victory over Vinton-Shellsburg.

The Saints competed at the Class 4A level in recent years and played mostly a 4A schedule this season in the Mississippi Valley Conference, but their enrollment put them in Class 3A this year for the postseason.

So far, so good, but the Saints (14-8) suspect it will get tougher Thursday night when they meet the scrappy Marion Indians (10-12) at the Linn-Mar gym.

J-Hawks tipped by PV, 47-45

BETTENDORF - Ryan Spelhaug's tip-in at the buzzer lifted Pleasant Valley past Jefferson, 47-45, Monday night at Pleasant Valley.

Jefferson erased a 10-point halftime deficit and grabbed the lead in the fourth quarter, but the J-Hawks' bid for an upset in the Class 4A substate quarterfinals fell a bucket short.

Will Carius, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, scored 22 points to lead Pleasant Valley (14-8). Spelhaug added 12 points, including a putback of Carius' off-balance shot to win the game.

Indoor facility keeps Lewis in the game

John Lewis learned how to catch fly balls when he was a budding young baseball player by racing after golf balls people would hit to him.

You probably won't get those kind of lessons from Lewis at the Line Drive Hitting complex in Swisher, but the former Kirkwood Community College baseball coach will be happy to teach you just about everything he knows about the grand old game.

Individuals and teams can practice on their own in the facility, which has six cages of various sizes, including a 70-foot cage that's suitable for pitching as well as hitting.
