Amanda Sahm wins Metro Spotlight Award

Marion junior Amanda Sahm is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Sahm averaged 13.3 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Marion High School basketball team this year. She also collected 61 assists, 34 steals and eight blocked shots.

The Indians finished with a modest 6-16 record, but they did not have any seniors on the squad and are optimistic about next year.

Daly Quinn wins Metro Spotlight Award

Marion senior Daly Quinn is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Quinn is a 5-foot-10 guard for the Marion High School basketball team. He is averaging 13.6 points heading into Monday night's Class 3A playoff game against Center Point-Urbana at the Xavier High School gym.

Quinn has scored 516 points the past two seasons for the Indians. He has made 52 3-pointers this season and has 42 rebounds, 32 assists and 30 steals.

Tearful Jeffery claims 120 state title

DES MOINES - Linn-Mar senior Alijah Jeffery rarely shows any emotion at a wrestling tournament, but he made an exception Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena to savor the best moment of his career.

Jeffery finished his perfect season Saturday with a 7-0 victory over Paul Glynn of Bettendorf in the Class 3A 120-pound finals to end the season as an undefeated state champion with a sparkling 41-0 record.

Jeffery raised his arms in celebration, saluted Linn-Mar fans in the sold-out arena, leaped into assistant coach Ryan Gotto's arms and was mobbed by happy teammates as he left the floor in tears.

"It's kind of overwhelming," he said a few minutes later. "It's hard to believe it finally happened."

Baker, Lembeck, Turner take 3rd at state

DES MOINES - One guy was elated, another guy philosophical in defeat and the third guy sorely disappointed.

That's what happens when you finish third at the state wrestling tournament. The level of happiness - or sadness - depends on your point of view.

Cole Turner (285) of Xavier, Ross Lembeck (152) of Linn-Mar and Brenden Baker (106) of Jefferson all placed third at the Class 3A state meet at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Saturday afternoon.

Jones helps Warriors fend off Hempstead

Tiny track star Jasmyne Jones took just one shot from the floor Saturday night in the Washington girls 70-56 Class 5A regional semifinal win over Dubuque Hempstead.

But it was a big one.

Down 17 points and looking all but done at the start of the third quarter, the visiting Mustangs sprinted all the way back to within 50-46 early in the fourth.
