BETTENDORF – Bettendorf overcame a slow start Saturday night (Nov. 27) to beat Cedar Rapids Jefferson 62-41 in the J-Hawks’ season opener.

The J-Hawks used a quick start to jump out to a 14-9 after the first quarter.

 

Jefferson was helped by Bettendorf’s poor shooting. The Bulldogs went 3 for 11 to start the game and had five early turnovers.  Jefferson made 5 of 9 shots to start the game and sophomore Kaitlyn Davidson scored eight points.

Bettendorf started the second quarter with a 12-0 run that was sparked by Kayla Contreras’ two steals that led to baskets. Bettendorf took control of the game with its powerful post duo of Megan Hayes and Morgan Lintz, who went a combined 8 for 8 in the quarter.  The Bulldogs outscored Jefferson 23-5 in the second quarter, when the J-Hawks were 1 of 9 shooting, and led 32-19 at halftime.

The J-Hawks battled to stay even in the third quarter sparked by senior Brittney Steffney’s 11 points.  She made 4 of 5 shots in the quarter, including three 3-pointers.

Bettendorf closed the door in the fourth quarter when Kayla Antle knocked down two 3-pointers early in the quarter to push the lead to 20.

Bettendorf shot 52 percent from the floor and 45 percent from the line while Jefferson shot only 34 percent from the floor and 60 percent from the line.

Hayes led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Lintz added 16.  Steffney led the J-Hawks with 15 points, Davidson had eight and sophomore Taylor Jacobson added seven. The J-Hawks travel to Cedar Falls on Tuesday.

The J-Hawk sophomores started the night with a 40-36 win over Bettendorf. The J-Hawks took the lead for good late in the fourth on a short jumper in the lane by Whylie Massey.

The Bulldogs were lead by Katie Moore’s 10 points while Shelby Brandt added 8.

Jefferson was led by Maddie Koolbeck’s 16 points. Kaitlyn Davidson added seven
