Rogers, Iowa City West rip J-Hawks, 63-14

A Cyclone blew through Kingston Stadium Friday night.

Iowa City West senior quarterback Charles Rogers, who earlier Friday committed to play football at Iowa State, ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more and the Trojans blew past Jefferson, 63-14, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game.

Rogers played only the first half, which ended with the Trojans (4-1) holding a 49-7 lead. He completed 8-of-8 passes for 164 yards and ran 11 times for 53 yards. He scored on runs of 1, 4 and 4 yards and threw touchdown passes of 36 and 49 yards to Dondre Alexander and Jeremy Morgan, respectively.

"Ever since they started recruiting me as a sophomore I've liked 'em," Rogers said of his decision to pick the Cyclones. "And I like Coach Paul Rhoads, period."

Rogers said he shocked Rhoads, who made a visit to West to see Rogers on Friday morning, when he told him he was going to Iowa State.

"I walked him out to his car and told him I wanted to be a Cyclone," Rogers said. "He was completely surprised."

Rogers said West Coach Brian Sauser had just told Rhoads that he didn't know when Rogers was going to make a decision.

"I made my decision today and it just felt right," Rogers said.

Rogers said he attended Iowa State's summer camp and he expects he probably will play defensive back for the Cyclones.

"That's what I did at camp," he said. "First they recruited me as just an athlete, but I went to camp and they started to recruit me as a corner, so ..."

So, Rhoads may want to reconsider which position he wants Rogers to play. Rogers guided West's hurry-up, no-huddle, basketball-on-grass, fast-break offense to 373 yards by halftime.

"We knew the game plan coming into the game was a quick pace because we knew (Jefferson) had some big guys out there," Rogers said. "Our team is well-conditioned and we work hard in practice everyday, and when you're well-conditioned and you work hard, this is the outcome."

The outcome was the 18th straight loss for the J-Hawks (0-5). They have not won since Sept. 25, 2009.

"They have extremely good skill players," Jefferson senior lineman Ryan Eivins said. "They broke it outside and we weren't able to catch up. The key is if our defensive line stops them before they get going, they're not going to get going."

But going they got.

West took the opening kickoff and marched 64 yards in eight plays. Rogers sneaked it in from the 1.

A Jefferson 3-and-out gave the ball back to the Trojans at their own 29. Four plays later Rogers laid in a 36-yard touchdown strike to Alexander for a 15-0 lead.

"They run some kind of weird defense where they leave a gap in the field. That's what the hookup to Dondre was," Rogers said. "I read the defense and it was just like in practice."

Jefferson responded with a 35-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Layne Sullivan to senior Christian Knox that cut West's lead to 15-7 with 2:48 left in the half. Sullivan started at quarterback and senior Alex Baxter shifted to running back because of injuries in the Jefferson backfield.

"We like Layne. Layne is our future," Jefferson Coach Jim Womochil said of the quarterback switch. "Alex is exciting and we need to get the ball in his hands. He has good hands and can catch the ball. This gives us another good athlete on the field. Alex does a good job for us wherever we put him."

The elation over scoring was short-lived. West roared back 70 yards in four plays and scored again when Rogers waded through the middle of the line from 4 yards out after bumping into tailback Anthony Brown in the backfield.

The Trojans had the ball four more times in the first half and scored touchdowns every time. With the score at 49-7, there was a running clock in the second half.

"Their (skill) players are very good," Womochil said of West, "and that's been our demise.

"We have great kids, I love these kids to death. They're good students and they work hard. But our like of speed and strength showed again. We didn't tackle well and if we get a skill player in space, it's trouble for us and has been the last couple of years. We need to find a way to corral people and keep them in the box so they don't get into the open field."

West had 18 plays of 10 yards or more.

On the plus side for the J-Hawks, senior running back Austin Short returned after missing the last two games with a hamstring injury. He ran for 90 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown.

The J-Hawks played without starting linemen Mic Vesey and Christian Ohrt, and tailback Kyle Mann. Ohrt, a 6-foot-9, 335-pound sophomore tackle, is out for the season with a stress fracture in his foot.

Jefferson plays Kennedy (2-3) next Friday at Kingston Stadium. Iowa City West hosts Xavier next Friday.
