DUBUQUE – Mitch Bredeson is starting to make a name for himself as Washington’s featured running back.

Bredeson rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns to help the Warriors snap a two-game losing streak with a 35-10 victory over Dubuque Senior Friday at Dalzell Field.

Bredeson needed 30 carries to reach his rushing total, and every one of his plunges came with heavy resistance from Senior’s front seven. In other words, the Washington junior earned his yards against the Rams.

“I give all the credit to my (offensive) line,” Bredeson said. “They did a great job tonight. I’m doing a better job reading my holes and getting to the second level.”

Bredeson has stepped in for injured tailback Will Griffin. Washington Coach Tony Lombardi admires Bredeson’s work ethic.

“He’s a tough kid,” Lombardi said. “He’s really coming into his own. We have asked a lot of our kids off the field in our strength and conditioning program.

“It’s really showing out on the field. I’m really proud of him.”

Bredeson’s longest run of the night came on the final play of the first quarter. He broke off a 64-yard touchdown run up the middle to give Washington (3-2) a 14-7 lead.

“I just saw green grass in front of me and ran as fast as I could,” Bredeson said.

The Warriors added to their lead on their next drive with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Braedon Tovey to David Tann.

Another turning point in the game came just before halftime. The Rams faced a fourth down at the Washington 6-yard line with 20 seconds left and the Warriors leading 21-7. Senior (1-4) elected to send Brent Wilker out to attempt a 23-yard field goal on the last play of the half.

Wilker’s attempt was blocked by Sean Bredl, the Warriors’ 6-foot-4 defensive lineman.

“It was a huge play,” Lombardi said. “(Bredl) has kind of been an emotional leader for our team. He’s been terrific for us this season.”

Bredeson added two more touchdown scores in the second half, and the Warriors’ defense allowed only a 27-yard field goal by Wilker late in the fourth quarter.

Washington senior Flynn Heald, who came into the game with 40 receptions, caught only one pass for 41 yards.

Washington stays on the road next week when it travels to No. 2 Iowa City High (5-0).
