Kirkwood wins twice at tourney

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Kirkwood staved off elimination by sweeping a pair of matches Friday at the NJCAA Division II Women's Volleyball tournament.

Kirkwood beat Monroe, N.Y., 3-0, winning by scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-17 in its first match. The Eagles then beat Lincoln Land, Ill., 3-0, later in the afternoon. The set scores were 26-24, 25-20 and 25-15.

Kirkwood (39-9) will play Phoenix, Ariz., (21-11) for ninth place Saturday at 11 a.m. (Iowa time).

Kirkwood falls at NJCAA volleyball tourney

TOLEDO, Ohio - Playing the host school on its home court in the national tournament did not turn out well for the Kirkwood Community College volleyball team Thursday.

The fourth-ranked Eagles lost to 17th-ranked Owens Community College, 21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-20, in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II Women's Volleyball Tournament at the Owens gym.

Kirkwood defeated Owens, 3-2, on a neutral floor Oct. 18, but Owens got revenge in front of its own fans Thursday.

Young skipped Mount Zion to join Kirkwood

Najeal Young had a chance to play basketball at one of the most famous prep schools in the country this year, but he declined an offer from Mount Zion Christian Academy to play for Kirkwood.

That's turned out to be good news for Coach Doug Wagemester and the Eagles.

Young made 10 of 11 shots and scored 22 points Tuesday night as Kirkwood rolled by the Grand View junior varsity, 81-56, in the home opener at Johnson Hall.

Kirkwood likes playing host school at nationals

The Kirkwood Community College volleyball team has to face the host school in the first round of their national tournament Thursday afternoon, but that's OK.

The Eagles like it that way.

Kirkwood (37-8) will meet Owens Community College (35-9) in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II tournament at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Owens gym in Toledo, Ohio.

Kirkwood seeded 5th in volleyball tourney

TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Kirkwood volleyball team received the No. 5 seed and will face host Owens Community College in the first round of the NJCAA Division II National Women's Volleyball Tournament when it opens Thursday.

Kirkwood (37-8) is making its second appearance in three years in the national tournament. The Eagles finished eighth in 2010.

Kirkwood plays Owens (35-9) at 2 p.m. (Iowa time) on Thursday. Owens is the host school of the tournament and received a No. 12 seed.
